Las dos primeras partes de la novela se publicaron en dicha revista en el transcurso de dos años y poco después aparecieron editadas aparte con el título Año 1805. A fines de 1869 la obra entera quedó impresa y en 2009 formó parte de la lista de los 100 Libros Más Vendidos. Es una de las obras cumbres de la literatura rusa y sin lugar a dudas de la literatura universal. En ella, Tolstói quiso narrar las vicisitudes de numerosos personajes de todo tipo y condición a lo largo de unos cincuenta años de historia rusa, desde las guerras napoleónicas hasta más allá de mediados del siglo XIX. Una parte de la crítica afirma que el sentido original del título sería Guerra y mundo. De hecho, las palabras «paz» y «mundo» son homónimas en ruso y se escriben igual a partir de la reforma ortográfica rusa de 1918. Sin embargo, Tolstói mismo tradujo el título al francés como La Guerre et la Paix. Tolstói dio tardíamente con este título definitivo inspirándose en la obra del teórico anarquista francés Pierre Joseph Proudhon (La Guerre et la Paix, 1861), al que encontró en Bruselas en 1861 y hacia el que sentía un profundo respeto.
